The Top 10 Phrases That Evidence Your Excellence at Work

by Elizabeth Mullen

In business, your word is your power. Results always hit the mark, and the sharp arrow of language points perception in direction of YOUR imminent success. This is not self-promotion, but precision of thought made audible in the world. Wouldn't it be useful to employ the power of language to color your image? Use these phrases and showcase your greatest strengths…

1.  W I will do that.

Offering your accountability before it's requested tells everyone that you are solid force of action, and grows your confidence naturally.

2.  What is the primary objective of…?

Asking this question gives you the psychology of leadership, and brings certainty to those who've employed your services. This question also gives you the space to creatively handle the request instead of only following formula.

3.  I am unavailable for business on....

Being at anyone's beck and call is not half as attractive as a clearly understood boundary. Better to state clearly your unavailability than to duck out unannounced. Leaders DO take leisure time, while followers fake unqualified availability.

4.  I must have assistance.

Even if you don't think you need it, stating this shines you in the leadership light. It will grant you a heroic appearance if you do tackle the project alone; or, at worst, give you a leg-worker.

5.  I intend to make you look good.

And mean it too. By stating this you relieve your employer/manager of their ultimate concern, and free them to see YOUR brilliance.

6.  I'll report progress and results.

Forecasting results puts YOU into momentum and removes confusion from those who employ you. When you know you'll be reporting, all you see is progress. And while they are looking at you, all they see is relief.

7.  When will the details be in order?

The required pieces needed to proceed must be made evident. The market research, license, or contracts that are not your department must be set apart from YOUR results-commitment. Point out the others' accountability and strengthen your image as autonomous leader. (did I mention this covers your rear quarters too?!)

8.  I will not ______.

Saying what you will not do beats "can not" or "I'll try" or "perhaps so-and-so…" with a big stick. Remember to walk quietly with the power you carry.

9.  I appreciate the challenge.

Saying this makes you look strong, not weak. The lazy say that what they do is easy, while champions consistently challenges themselves.

10.  When will we hold our re-strategizing meeting?

Stating this grants you entree into an expanded role--or a way out alltogether! As long as you acknowledge that things change, you appear a visionary, and your perspective ultimately respected.
